02 Volkswagon Jetta Engine Oil Light: What does this mean?

One of my students has this car (not the turbo). He says that the oil light is coming on intermittingly. What exactly does this mean? It means more than change your oil, doesn't it? Is taking the car to someplace like Valvoline Instant Oil Change a good start or is a more serious look needed?02 Volkswagon Jetta Engine Oil Light: What does this mean?
Oil lite indicates loss of oil pressure. If the person driving the car is pushing the limits into a corner, the oil pick-up may be on the other side of the pan and unable to pick-up any oil. If this is the case, change to a baffled pan or just back off! If it is coming on at low idle, then the bearings are most likely going out and soon that light won't be the problem. Check the oil level, and, make sure the filter has been changed recently with the CORRECT filter.
Duh Add Oil02 Volkswagon Jetta Engine Oil Light: What does this mean?
Might be out of oil,check
Yes, he needs to get his oil checked. It could be numerous things, the light is triggered by all oil variations. Low oil, dirty oil, wrong oil type, a leak. Have him take it to get checked out, shouldn't cost more that 20.00. Good Luck!02 Volkswagon Jetta Engine Oil Light: What does this mean?
It means this Jetta is just about to become an anchor. Stop driving immediately and and oil!!
This could be a serious problem. You could have low voltage in the cars electrical system or even worse be lossing oil pressure. Either way you should probably get it checked soon or it could fataly damage you cars engine.
If the light is coming on intermittantly, the car could be losing oil pressure. Have him take it to a reliable shop where they can see if it is the oil pump, or maybe just a clogged oil filter.

Just tell him that the light is important. If the oil cannot efficiently get through the motor........ the motor goes Poof..... and will be costly to replace.
It means his car is about to run out of oil..I would put some in ASAP before you drive it to jiffy lube. the oil pan could be dented causing it to think it's low when it's not. Either way put some in there.
ANOTHER POSSIBILITY COULD BE AS SIMPLE AS A SENSOR GOING BAD MOST OF THE TIME IT'S LOCATED IN THE OIL PAN.VDUBS ARE KNOWN FOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS ANYWAY.
