What's with all of the abbreviations?

And I'm not talking about texting. I mean when there is a phrase or a company name or even a process, it has to be abbreviated. Example:



Net Operating Cost= NOC

National Tire and Battery= NTB

Politically Correct= PC

Pardon The Interuption= PTI

It's either easier to say, or people are just too lazy to say/spell it out.
In journalism it's often the style. On first reference, spell it out. All later references, use the initials or acronym (like North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO).What's with all of the abbreviations?
